CHECK YOUR SYMPTOMS

Talk to your doctor to find a treatment option that is right for you.

Raising the topic of OAB

There is no right or wrong way to bring up the subject of your OAB with your doctor. However, making a specific appointment to discuss how your life is being affected by OAB will give you and your doctor plenty of time to discuss your symptoms and treatment options. How you start the discussion will depend on your relationship with your doctor, and how comfortable you feel talking about your symptoms.

You may find it easiest to come straight to the point:
“I want to discuss a bladder control problem.”

You may first want to alert your doctor to the fact you are embarrassed, so they will be able to reassure and encourage you to talk by asking some questions:
"Something has been bothering me for several months. To tell the truth, I've been too embarrassed to tell you about it. I know you're here to listen, but I just feel awkward talking about this."

You could start the conversation on a positive note:
"I was hoping that you might be able to help me with something that has been bothering me."

If you feel you really can't put your concerns into words, try listing your symptoms and questions on a piece of paper and bringing this with you to the doctor. Or you can print a page from this website that describes your symptoms, such as the OAB symptom questionnaire, and use that to start the conversation:
I wanted to talk to you about this because this description sounds just like me.

Most people find that once they've brought the subject up and gotten past the first awkward moments, they feel a lot more comfortable talking openly.

If you decide to talk about something else first, just make sure you don't wait until the end of the visit to discuss your OAB symptoms. It can be easy to delay the topic until the very last minute, but it’s important that your doctor has enough time to discuss things with you and assess you properly.
